1931. Born in Triest. Dual citizen of Switzerland and Italy.
Grew up in Italy, Libya and Switzerland.

1948-49. Training at the Arts and Crafts School of Basel (painting, drafting, commercial graphics).

1949-55. Work as a painter.

1952. Founded the artists' association Ulysees - Young Art Movement. Over three years time this held regular shows in its own space, also including readings, lectures and public discussion evenings, theater and film showings.

1955-57. Barcelona. Gave up painting for a time. First professional work as a graphic artist and advertising consultant.


1957-58. Zurich. Worked for Graphis magazine.


1958-59. Paris and Basel: freelance work at various ad agencies in Paris and Zurich.

1959. Man as Reflected in Science. Hired by the Globus department store in Basel to design an exhibition to commemorate the 500-year anniversary of the founding of the University of Basel.

In Paris, began filming for Jazz in Camera, an experimental film on jazz with the Donald Byrd Quintett. Camera: Alain Cloquet.
This project was broken off on the bankruptcy of its financier, Parisian businessman André Peyron.


1960-68. Paris. Until 1961, artistic director at the Robert Delpire ad agency. Subsequent freelance work as graphic artist and art director.

  Resumed artistic work as painter and sculptor, allowing less and less commercial work. First visit to the United States in 1965.
  1968. Moved to Zurich. Parallel to work as an artist, graphic artist and art director, douned the multiple-edition Xartcollection (together with three partners, Heinz Bütler, Rolf Fehlbaum and Erwin Meierhofer).
  Solo and group shows in Basel, Zurich, Geneva, Paris, London, Oslo, Eindhoven, Berlin, New York, Philadelphia and Caracas.
  1971. Issuance of art wallpaper collection Xartwalls.
  From 1973. Reduction of commerical work to two months a year. Purchase of a house and regular residence in Horta de San Juan (Tarragona), Spain.
Following completion of a psychoanalysis, training at the Psychoanalytic Seminar of Zurich starting in 1975.

1978. Founded and collected for the Museo de Arte Popular in Horta de San
Juan (Tarragona), Spain

From 1980. Writings on art theory and sporadic articles for the newspaper Tages-Anzeiger, Zurich.

1987. Publication of Die Erfahrung des Ungewissen in der Kunst der Gegenwart by Waser Verlag, Zurich.

1992 - 94. Curator of the wandering exhibition African Seats, for the Vitra Design Museum, Weil am Rhein. Opening: June 10, 1994, further stations in Paris (1994), Munich and Kolding, Denmark (1995), Vienna (1995-96), Tervuren, Belgium (1996). Editor and co-author of the eponymous catalogue published by Prestel Verlag, Munic.


1994. Publication by Prestel Verlag, after 10 years of work, of Die Kunst der Moderne. Zur Struktur und Dynamik ihrer Entwicklung. Von Goya bis Beuys.

1999. Publication of the English edition, The Art of Modernism, by Prestel, and of the Spanish edition, El Arte de la Modernidad, by Ediciones del Serbal, Barcelona.

2001. TASCHEN Verlag, Cologne, publishes Timelines - The Art of Modernism in English, German, French and Dutch editions.

2001. First experiments with digital image processing.

Since 2002 work on a video project and digitally manipulated stills and photos.
